Sound Quality – It is all relative…

Posted By on October 13, 2011

So I finally got completely kicked out of my parent’s house.  You know those boxes they were gracious enough to store for you since high school or those college days?  My mother dumped them all in my office a few weeks ago as she unambiguously cut the umbilical cord.   I’d been storing my old college dorm room stereo system at my folks house for over 12 years.  I used to think this Sony receiver and the Bose speakers were the ultimate setup.  I thought the quality of sound was unmistakeably awesome.  I was super excited the other day to bust out one of my turntables and listen to some vinyl on my old stereo system.  I was saddened by what I heard.  Well, first I was excited that it still worked, but then, when I heard the sound quality, my heart sank.  Gone was the exciting sound I used to hear.  All I hear now is some raspy highs combined with too much low end.  12 years ago it sounded different to me.  After hearing great PA speakers in the store and being spoiled by my Adam studio monitor setup, this home system is missing a lot now.

Sound is relative. What you have is great until you hear something better.  It’s hard being hooked on gear…I think I need a pair of QSC K10 for my living room…

Whoa!  Mean!  What do you think DeShannon?  Does he have a good embouchure?  I like seeing people get creative with their instruments…

Akai MPC1000 – custom

Posted By on February 7, 2011

After seven years of loyal service and abuse, my original Akai MPC 1000 crapped out on me. I just got a new one, but in remembrance of my trusted superman blue/red 1000, I kept the red racks and memory card slot.

We keep the 1000 in stock at both stores. They are usually behind a glass case (5000 and 500 are out), but we are happy to bust it out for you if you ever want to mess with one. The sound quality of an MPC is hard to beat. After years of using a computer to sequence and make beats, I always ended up coming back to my MPC for it’s simplicity, hands on good fun, and the sound quality. MPCs just sound more punchy and in your face than other gear I have messed with. When you watch the BeatRoot competitions you see plenty of guys making killer beats in many different ways, but when guys bust their beats on an MPC you really here the difference of presence from the laptops. It has that fat sound.

If you are looking to sequence samples, the MPC1000 is a great piece to own. I beat my old one to death and left it on for thousands and thousands of hours. May it rest in peace…..

Easy Music Center on KHON Morning News – Shara Enay talks to Peter Dods, the owner of Easy Music Center

Posted By on July 28, 2010

Hey!  I was on the morning news.  I was a little nervous and didn’t want to say anything too dumb so I’m speaking pretty slowly here.  Thank goodness Shara was so nice and easy to talk to.

Tasty Asian Style Taco Eatery – Taste!

Posted By on July 15, 2010

Local style tacos taste mean! Ribeye with Kalbi marinade and wasabi dressing, Char Siu with Shoyu Aioli and Ginger dressing, and some other tasty delights! This place tastes super good! It is on Beretania before you hit McCully St. in the Ocean Sports bar parking lot. It is open Monday thru Friday for lunch hours. I tried the Kalbi (more like Bulgogi) and the shrimp. So ONOLICIOUS!!!! Get there on the early side. He ran out due to high demand today. Best taco I ever had!

Jake Shimabukuro stopped by today

Posted By on July 1, 2010

Jake is such a nice and humble guy.  I am always thrilled to see him come by the store.  He picked up a Genz Benz Shuttle 10″ to fill out the low end for his acoustic amp when playing his Ukulele.  I think he was stoked on the sound and how light the unit was.  I’m glad we had what he needed!  Chee!

He dropped off a bunch of copies of his new Single “Go For Broke”  – The song is dedicated to the Nisei WWII soldiers – the most decorated group in military history.  You can download it at his website (http://www.jakeshimabukuro.com/?t=goforbroke) for free.

Jake!  You making Allen and me (maybe just me) look fat man!

I left Nashville today. Just got into NYC, and I am sitting on the top of my friend’s apt rooftop lounge. The view here is amazing. I haven’t been back to NYC in over three years. I’m going to check out some of the mega music stores while I’m here, and hopefully I come back with some great ideas on how we can make our store better in Hawaii.
