Yoshi’s Tech Corner : Active electric guitar pickups an introduction

Posted By on April 8, 2012

So, maybe you have been hearing people talk about “active pickups” and are wondering what they are talking about?

Well, worry no more, today we are going on a journey to active pickup land, and hopefully I can help you with your pickup quandary.

To start, you need to know what a regular non active or passive pickups is.  A passive pickup is a pickup that through a magnetic coil or some other means creates an electric signal from the vibrations of the strings and transmits it to an amplifier so the volume can be increased and/or recorded.  This pickup works on its own without any further assistance.

The “active” part of an active pickup has a thing called a pre-amplifier which is located either on the pickup or in the control cavity of the guitar.  What it does is alter the signal, eq and output before the signal goes to the amplifier.  What this means for you is that (depending on the model) aside from your normal volume and tone control, you could possibly have low, mid, and high control as well.

There are draw backs though with active pickups.  They require a power source.  Also, if the system runs on a 9 volt, the way the system saves power is that when the instrument is unplugged, the circuit is disconnected.  So if you leave the cable in the instrument while not playing it, the battery will drain faster than normal.

Another pro/con, depending on who you talk to, active pickups change the sound of the instrument.  This also goes for any pickup change, but it is worth stating.  The hard part is that the sound change is extremely subjective so the best thing to do if you can is to try it out for your self and form your own opinion.  Secondly active pickups cut out a lot of background noise associated with passive pickups so if you are in a magnetically “noisy” area they might help.

Hopefully this article has educated and informed you about active pickups, and helped guide you in the direction you desire.  If you still want to try out a guitar with active pickups we usually have one at our stores so give us a call or come on down and check us out.

Promethean P5210 plus friends by Ibanez

Posted By on March 23, 2012

The last time I was  impressed with a new combo bass amp was the time SWR came out with their California Blonde. This time, I am blown away by the tonal clarity and headroom provided by the new Promethean Bass Amp line by Ibanez. These bass amps are compact with power and versatility.

Out of the Prometheans, I picked the P5210 to show the special EQ options. In the video below, I also feature its clear sound, massive headroom and convertibility. Yes, it is very easy to unscrew the ‘head’ of the amp and take it to a gig or rehearsal where you can plug into whatever cabinet you have available.

The Prometheans make great -  sound easy!

Fender Deluxe Active P Bass Special

Posted By on March 9, 2012

One of my favorite basses is the Fender ‘Deluxe Active P Bass Special’. I’ve always liked both P- and J-basses, and this one combines both of them. And it does so with an added kick: Active pickup circuitry!

To get the most out of this tricked out pick up configuration, Fender has designed a ‘special’ rotary knob solution. The jazz bass pickup in the bridge position can be blended with the split single-coil P-bass pickup to easily switch from either sound to the other classic sound characteristic. In the video below, I focused on the very effective three-band active EQ and tricked out treble and mid boost/cut features. This really lets you milk the tonal possibilities of this two-in-one-bass.

In terms of classic Fender bass sounds, this one does it all with a punch.

Upright Bass String….. we got them!

Posted By on September 13, 2011

You have been asking for upright bass strings so here they are.   An assortment for the high school band player to the hillbilly player doing dog house slap.  Super Sensitives work great for the player that is using a bow and needs a set of strings at an affordable price. My favorite are the Labella 1006 nylon wound strings. They have a comparable sound to gut but at half the price and hold up much better than gut in the weather conditions in Hawaii. We also carry the La Bella rope core strings that are a step up from the traditional steel string and would work great for multiple applications .
